Details about this class
Maps are more than just data on a page - they're a form of visual communication, and great map design combines analytical thinking with creativity. In this class, you'll explore the art and science of making maps, learning how to turn geographic data into maps that are engaging, visually compelling, and effective.
You'll experiment with visual hierarchy, layout and composition, balance, typography, color theory, and data visualization to communicate your message and tell a story with map. Through an iterative design process and regular in-class peer reviews, you'll share ideas, get feedback, refine your work and develop your cartographic skills.
You'll put these concepts into practice through two major design projects: a National Park map and a geographic-focused Infographic. Both projects will challenge you to think creatively and make intentional design choices. All projects and work in this class are created in ArcGIS Pro, GIS desktop software.
